Wedding Songs – License Fees and Copyright Issues
There seems to be much confusion with regards to the type of wedding songs that can be played during a wedding and what are the extra fees and license involved. And it’s not helping that the available information on RIPS and COMPASS is vague and not very enlightening.
Background Wedding Songs
There are actually three types of music that wedding couples will be looking at during the wedding ceremony. First, it’s the background music played by the DJ. This would include the music used during the ‘entrance’ of the couple and any wedding songs used for dancing, games, etc. Playing music as the background should be covered by your hotel as most hotels should have obtained a license to play music from ORIGINAL CDs (not pirated) for the many functions and events that take place in the hotel. If you are not clear, you should approach your hotel hotel manager about this.
Wedding Songs Performed by Live Bands
The second type of wedding songs you might want to play are songs by live bands. In the event that you are hiring a live band or even thinking of performing a song for your other half, you would actually need to obtain a license or a permit from COMPASS . If you are hiring a band, you should ask the band to settle this for you. But do give COMPASS a call just to avoid any problems.
Wedding Songs for Use in Montage and Wedding Video
The last type of music would involve wedding songs that are played on dvds. This would include music that you use for your montage sequence and also for the video you hired the videographer to make. Any additional music that you put into the video/dvd would entail an additional license fee. And RIPS is the organization in charge of this. Please note the difference between COMPASS and RIPS. COMPASS is in charge of ‘live performance’ of music (meaning they represent the lyricist, artists and the producers of the original music) while RIPS is taking care of the ‘reproduction’ of the music (transfer of music on tape/dvd/cd etc). For more information, you can go to RIPS. You need to check with your videographer or the production house that produces your montage video and make sure the license and the permit is already obtained.
The important thing to note is that music that you use will entail costs and that can be quite costly, especially if the music you use are popular and famous music.
